Why is it so important to get target traffic? It is simple. What do you prefer 300 visits that result in 30 sales or 3000 visits that result in 1 sale?
Target traffic depends on your the keyword you choose. If your keyword are too broad it will bring you lots of traffic, but also few sales. If you choose focused keywords  that will bring less traffic to your site but you will get more sales. You get targeted traffic.
